Once a part of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary's campus, the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury, MO is today the headquarters and curia (governing body) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Job Summary

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instruction and supervision to students in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher follows lesson plans, maintains a positive and productive learning environment, manages classroom behavior, and ensures the safety and well-being of all students. This role supports continuity of instruction and may involve working across various grade levels, subject areas, and educational settings.

Job Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction

• Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the regular teacher or school administration.
• Deliver instructional content using appropriate teaching methods, materials, technology, and classroom resources.
• Adjust lessons and activities as needed to address varying student needs and learning levels.
• Provide clear instructions and maintain continuity of the established classroom curriculum.

Classroom Management

• Maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and productive classroom environment.
• Establish and reinforce appropriate classroom expectations and school policies.
• Monitor student behavior and address disruptions using appropriate classroom-management strategies.
• Promote a positive learning environment that supports student success.

Student Engagement and Support

• Encourage active student participation in classroom activities and assignments.
• Provide guidance and support to help students understand instructional material.
• Respond appropriately to individual student needs while maintaining classroom routines and expectations.
• Foster respectful and positive interactions among students.

Assessments and Feedback

• Monitor student participation, progress, and completion of assigned work.
• Administer quizzes, tests, and other assessments as directed by the regular teacher or school administration.
• Provide appropriate feedback and document relevant student information.
• Submit completed assignments, assessments, and required reports to the regular teacher or designated school administrator.

Communication

• Communicate professionally and effectively with students, teachers, school staff, administrators, and other relevant personnel.
• Provide the regular teacher or school administration with updates regarding classroom activities, student concerns, and notable events.
• Promptly report behavioral concerns, conflicts, accidents, injuries, or other incidents to the appropriate school personnel.

Safety and Student Well-Being

• Maintain a safe and supportive environment that promotes students' physical and emotional well-being.
• Follow all school policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and emergency protocols.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and seek assistance from school personnel when necessary.
• Maintain appropriate supervision of students throughout the school day.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Bachelor's degree in education or a related field preferred.

Licensing and Certification

• A valid teaching certification or substitute teacher permit may be required, depending on state and school requirements.

Job Requirements

• Prior teaching, classroom, childcare, or related educational experience preferred but not always required.
• Experience working with students across different grade levels or educational settings is a plus.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective classroom management.
• Flexibility and adaptability when working with different teachers, grade levels, subjects, and school environments.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and carry out lesson plans effectively.
• Basic proficiency with classroom technology, instructional tools, and educational resources.
• Sound judgment, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to respond appropriately to changing classroom situations.
• Commitment to maintaining student safety, confidentiality, and a positive learning environment.
